Pilkington Deutschland AG uses LED displays to increase employees' awareness

Communicating occupational safety and health effectively

Advantages at a glance

  • Raising awareness of dangerous situations
  • Information on accident black spots
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Maintenance-free & durable display systems

Quartz sand and fire – with the perfected know-how of a traditional craftmanship Pilkington Deutschland AG, as a part of the NSG Group, a leading company in the production of glasses worldwide, produces flat glass for different industrial applications: Float glass, refined semifinished products, profiled glass as well as fire-resistant glass and glass for the solar industry. A high level of occupational safety has always been very important for Pilkington. With a display, made by the supplier of system electronics microSYST, indicating the accident-free days everyone can see it, when entering the premises.

A modular structure for an easy customer-specific adjustment

"In the glass producing industry safety at work is the top priority. The working with glass - both when it is hot and liquid and when it is a sharp-edged glass spane – has a lot of potential for injuries", explains Georg Frey from Pilkington’s technical services. In order to visualise the taken measurements to prevent accidents, the company has installed a powerful LED display visualising the accident-free days in the entrance and entry of the plant in Weiherhammer – with a reading distance of up to 40 meters, microSYST supplied the necessary customised hardware and software adapted to the conditions on site. "Due to the modular structure of our display systems, we were able to use the full potential of the system and to deliver a customised product without any additional major and time-consuming development work", confirms Harald Kilian, managing director and owner of microSYST.

Installation without any visible frame

The LED displays have been produced as numeric built-in displays with rear panel installation. That enabled the integration into the stainless steel construction of the customer without any visible frame. The integrated displays are equipped with protection class IP65 and are therefore ideally suited for being used in the weather-exposed outdoor area of the premises. A character height of 100 millimetres ensures a perfect readability, even from a long distance. Due to the latest LED technology this results from the particularly high contrast with perfect energy efficiency at the same time. The data input is made by a simple but effective pulse counter.

"Technical problems? Not a bit!"

"Completely satisfied", sums up Frey regarding the installation of the display indicating the accident-free days together with microSYST. "For our employees, which pass through every day it is a confirmation and motivation at the same time to use caution in everyday business life. But also the effects on others – suppliers, customers and other companies are just as important." The display, which is used 24 hours, 7 days is maintenance-free due to a fanless technology and high-quality components. "Failures or technical problems? Not a bit!", once again confirms Frey very satisfied. And hopes, that the accident-free days of the employees will continue to increase.
