microSYST once again supplies LED display for bicycle barometer in Vorarlberg
Advantages at a glance
Vorarlberg, September 2025 – “How many people actually ride bicycles?” The answer to this question is easily visible in Vorarlberg: with the help of public bicycle barometers. The Vorarlberg state government has chosen systems electronics provider microSYST as their partner, who already supplied LED displays in 2018 and 2024 – a new project is now in the starting blocks.
Reliable LED technology – individually tailored
The LED display was specially equipped with white and yellow LEDs according to customer requirements. This desired colour combination ensures intuitive differentiation:
- White: Number of cyclists today
- Yellow: Total number in the current year
The LEDs are particularly bright and high-contrast for optimum readability – both in direct sunlight and in the dark. The design deliberately uses a digit height of 100 mm, allowing the numbers to be clearly read from a distance of up to 40 metres. The LED display is designed for continuous operation, can withstand all weather conditions and is completely maintenance-free – all reasons why the state government once again chose microSYST.
When it comes to installation and system communication, the expert also offers smart solutions: the LED display can be attached directly to the barometer housing – without any major installation effort. The technical connection to the wheel barometer system is made via the Profibus DP interface, which allows the measurement data to be visualised directly and just-in-time on the display.
Added value for cycling traffic planning in Vorarlberg
Bicycle counting stations provide information about how many people cycle on which days and enable planning teams to create new offerings in the right locations. Currently, bicycle traffic is counted at 21 locations in Vorarlberg, with new locations being added all the time. Five of these locations are currently equipped with a bicycle barometer that displays the figures live for everyone to see.
The data collected not only provides a valuable basis for transport planning, but also makes everyday cycling immediately visible. The displays thus help to motivate people to cycle more often – and at the same time show how important cycling already is in Vorarlberg. As the figures show, the bicycle counting station at Lochau harbour recorded almost 800,000 passages on the popular section of the Lake Constance cycle path in 2022.
Another project planned
Representatives of the Vorarlberg provincial government are very satisfied with the digital cycle barometers: “microSYST displays are durable, maintenance-free and therefore the ideal solution for our cycle barometers. That's why we will continue to rely on them in the future.” Further installations are planned for this year, with a total of two cycle barometers with integrated LED displays from microSYST. The supplier's team is delighted to be supporting the promotion of cycling in Vorarlberg with innovative technology and reliable quality – visible, sustainable and directly in people's everyday lives.
