TFTs protected against water and chlorine on both sides at the hungarian canoe performance centre

microSYST supports Olympians in the streaming canal

Advantages at a glance

  • Robust stainless steel housing for use in environments with water, chlorine and high humidity
  • Increased participant performance thanks to just-in-time information
  • Control programme for visualising self-created training plans
  • Optimum readability from different angles

More power, better technique, higher speed - parameters that are crucial in both sporting and industrial environments. In the case of the Kayak Canoe Academy in the Hungarian town of Sukoró, both of these areas come together: Two monitors from the system electronics provider microSYST ensure focused training for the canoeists at the performance centre.

TFT technology increases display performance

The two 55-inch monitors from the migra series are installed directly at the edge of the current pool - just a few centimetres above the surface of the water to give the canoeists training the best possible view of the display area. The engineering company fm control from Plauen has been planning such aqua sports training facilities worldwide for decades and has been equipping them with visualisation solutions from microSYST for a long time. "We briefly trialled other providers. However, the microSYST displays have proven themselves in this stressful environment with water, chlorine and high humidity. By switching to TFT technology, we were able to improve the performance for the canoe athletes even further," explains Rainer Grimm, Managing Director of fm control. On the one hand, the TFT technology displays without a time delay - the athletes are informed in real time. On the other hand, the entire visualisation requirement is now shown on one of the two monitors instead of several individual displays - including a running timer, the speed and the distance covered. "This makes the information much quicker and more intuitive for the athletes to understand." explains Grimm again.

Technical sparring by visualisation

A control programme can be used to display self-created training sessions with different requirements in terms of time, speed or distance. In addition to the performance parameters, the monitor also helps to determine the position of the canoe within the pool. The canoe is connected to a boom for this purpose, which ensures that the sports equipment does not drift too close to the edge of the pool, but remains free to move within limits. The position of the boat within the current channel is calculated via the boom and also displayed on the monitor. The canoeists can thus synchronise their position in the pool at any time and take countermeasures if necessary. A video can be played on the second monitor, which shows the movements of the canoeist currently training with a live cam - this allows the athletes to independently assess and adjust their technique while rowing.

Withstands every wave

To ensure that the technology can withstand the changing strains of high-speed water, chlorine, humidity and temperature without any problems, microSYST enclosed the monitor technology in specially protected stainless steel housings. An anti-reflective pane made of laminated safety glass (LSG) not only protects the technology, but also ensures problem-free readability in any training situation and under different viewing angles and changing light conditions. The corresponding wall bracket, which is also made of stainless steel, tilt-adjustable and with VESA mounting points, was manufactured by microSYST to fit perfectly. The low operating voltage of 24 VDC is a necessity for installation in the immediate vicinity of the pool. Control via HDMI ensures the fastest, loss-free transmission - both TFTs are connected like additional PC monitors.

Top sporting performance and TFT industrial technology - they rarely come so close together as they do in the Canoe Performance Centre.
