HS Timber Group boosts efficiency in goods reception with LED visualisation from microSYST

Advantages at a glance

  • Faster truck handling
  • Goods receipt independent of staff
  • Clear, real-time communication
  • Efficient material flow

Wood is one of the most versatile and sustainable materials of our time and plays an increasingly central role in industrial supply chains. The HS Timber Group is one of the world’s leading timber processing companies and employs over 3,000 people across 8 countries. Founded in Austria and headquartered in Vienna, the company develops innovative timber-based solutions at its international sites, with sustainable forest management firmly embedded throughout the entire supply chain.

Growing logistics demands require new control methods

At the German site, highly automated production and logistics processes operate on an industrial level. Increasing delivery frequencies presented growing challenges, particularly for goods receipt and truck handling.
With the increasing frequency of deliveries, processes needed to be standardised further and made less reliant on staff presence. The aim was to introduce self-service goods reception and a more flexible, clearly structured truck management to improve traffic flow within the plant. At the same time, waiting times had to be reduced and the flow of materials needed to be stabilised.

High-brightness real-time visualisation

To implement this, microSYST Systemelectronic GmbH utilised a robust LED-based display system. The solution consists of two displays mounted back-to-back on a mast, including a main display (64 × 16 pixels) and a secondary display (32 × 16 pixels).
The displays are designed for demanding industrial environments and offer excellent readability even in direct sunlight, thanks to ultra-bright LEDs and automatic brightness adjustment. With an RS485 connection, IP44 protection rating and a temperature range of –20 to +50 °C, the module is optimised for long-term outdoor use.
The lean system architecture, which does not require complex IT integration, enables rapid implementation and consistently stable process communication.

Clear processes and fewer standstills

The use of LED displays significantly simplifies the management of trucks and materials. Drivers receive clear, immediately visible instructions and are guided directly to the correct storage location for the materials.
Control is intentionally intuitive, via a wireless remote control. Staff select from four standard instructions for truck drivers, which are transmitted directly to the displays. The second display mirrors the information shown on the main display for in-plant vehicles, thereby enhancing process security.

Greater efficiency in material flow

Thanks to the LED-based solution from microSYST Systemelectronic GmbH, the HS Timber Group has been able to sustainably optimise its goods reception and truck management at its site in Kodersdorf. The combination of ease of use, rapid implementation and high robustness ensures transparent processes and a noticeable reduction in the workload of day-to-day operations.
“Our aim was to make goods reception independent of human resources and to guide truck drivers from various countries working for our contracted freight forwarders efficiently through the site. The LED displays provide clear instructions, reduce the need for queries and noticeably improve the material flow,” explains Benjamin Gnieser, Executive Assistant and Project Manager. The concept demonstrates how complex logistics processes can be significantly simplified through targeted digitalisation in the right areas, without the need for far-reaching system changes.
