Klinikum Mittelbaden relies on an innovative emergency room timer from microSYST

Better safety and efficiency in emergency care

Advantages at a glance

  • Visualisation of emergency room times accurate to the second
  • Easy to operate using a palm switch
  • Individually programmable sequence control
  • Maintenance-free system for 24-hour operation

Emergency room in the hospital – every second counts. This is also the case at Klinikum Mittelbaden, a local health care organisation that operates two acute care hospitals as well as other facilities such as medical care centres, nursing homes and a palliative care centre. microSYST, a leading provider in the field of system electronics, has equipped Klinikum Mittelbaden’s two locations in Baden-Baden and Rastatt with a suitable emergency room clock system.

Customised emergency room timer for continuous use

Functional, intuitive and reliable – these are the key requirements for an emergency room timer in a hospital. microSYST offers a complete, ready-to-use package for this purpose: an LED display with a stopwatch, including a buzzer and an audible alarm.

For visualisation, microSYST utilises the line-oriented “miline” LED display, which is operated via a robust palm switch with start, stop and reset functions. This enables medical teams to access the time control system precisely and reliably in an emergency – a crucial factor in highly dynamic emergency situations. The LED display, with its integrated quartz clock, shows shock times accurate to the second. In addition, a buzzer is fitted as an audible alarm to alert emergency team staff about the current times.

The digit heights on the LED display are variably adjustable between 50 and 120 millimetres, ensuring optimum readability in the emergency room. The LEDs feature a wide colour spectrum, meaning the display colours can be customised to suit the customer’s requirements. Another advantage is that, as the technology is maintenance-free, the display of emergency room times is guaranteed around the clock – with high brightness and high contrast for optimal recognition at a glance.

On-site adaptation of the workflow control is possible

The system’s workflow control is individually programmable: the emergency room algorithm can be customised in line with the ABCD protocol for initial care. For the hospital, this was one of the main reasons for choosing the supplier microSYST: “The configuration options and the ability to intervene in the system were ultimately decisive in our decision to opt for the miline. Without involving the manufacturer, we can access the display and functionality via the USB port,” said Christian Köhler, deputy ward manager of the central emergency room in Baden-Baden, summarising his decision.

Benefits for patients and staff

With around 3,600 staff members, Klinikum Mittelbaden is one of the region’s largest employers. In the central emergency rooms (CER) where microSYST’s new emergency room timer system is in use, highly qualified teams are on hand around the clock to treat over 45,000 patients each year. The installation of the new emergency room timers provides targeted support for the work of the emergency teams. “Time is one of the most important factors in emergency medicine. Thanks to the new system, procedures in the emergency room can be structured even more clearly – a real benefit for patients and staff,” emphasises Köhler.
